Lumbutts Graveyard – Update 4th November 2024
Following completion of the roof repairs to the Chapel, we are pleased to confirm that the graveyard has now reopened so that families and friends can visit graves.
There are a number of memorials of concern, marked with tape and a sticker. Avoid these but also be aware that all memorials are potentially unstable, so please take great care.
Paths and surfaces can be uneven and slippery, particularly in wet weather. Please take care!
Signage at the entrance explains that no work of any kind is to be undertaken in the graveyard without the prior approval of the Circuit. (Flowers on graves are acceptable.) Please contact the Circuit if you wish to carry out any research including general transcriptions of memorials
The survey of gravestones and memorials of concern, undertaken by a Conservation Architect, remains on the Circuit website at www.calderdalemethodistcircuit.org.uk. Please address any queries from memorial owners concerning memorials listed therein to graveyards@calderdalemethodistcircuit.org.uk. Those without internet access can leave their contact details on 07946 023968 .
The survey lists all memorials of concern, including the 7 originally laid down. With regard to these 7 alone, we aim to reinstate them to their condition prior to that action, at Circuit cost. This will mean repairing damage caused in that process and standing them back up again. These memorials are numbered 15, 27,30,31,35,85/87, 162.

The Circuit covers the area of the Calderdale Metropolitan Borough which includes a variety of communities from towns to villages. There are 18 churches in the Circuit, two of which are Local Ecumenical Partnerships (LEPs), one with the URC and a second with the Church of England. Two of the churches, Mount Zion Methodist Church, and Heptonstall Methodist Church are heritage churches with Heptonstall being the oldest church in Methodism which has been in continual worship.
